Another Recycling Initiative From Huhtamaki and Partners
Proving that disposable paper cups can be recycled, Huhtamaki, Festival Republic, Pronto-Pack and Simply Cups worked together on a major dual-site initiative during the 2017 festival season. The four companies combined together to ensure that all paper cups were collected during the Leeds and Reading festivals and then taken for recycling afterwards.
At the end of August this year Huhtamaki, global specialist in packaging for food and drink, sponsored an innovative and measurably effective collection and recycling scheme for paper cups at Reading and Leeds Festivals, where 170,000 people attended over the August Bank holiday weekend.
Working in partnership with Festival Republic, the UK’s leading festival and event promoter, Simply Cups, the UK’s first dedicated cup collection and recycling service, and Carlsberg, Huhtamaki co-funded a scheme by which festival revellers were encouraged to collect used disposable paper cups from the festival arena and to bring them back to one of three dedicated ‘Return Points’.
Once collected, the cups were stacked, bagged and then placed in to skips until each event closed. From here, the fully recyclable cups were collected by Simply Cups and taken to the organisation’s depot for baling and for onward transport to the recycling facility.
“We wanted to show that by combining forces, we could not only enhance the cleanliness of the arena during the festival,” said Victoria Chapman, Sustainability Co-ordinator at Festival Republic, “but we could also ensure that the collected cups are recycled afterwards.”
In total, 225,000 paper cups were collected from Leeds Festival and a further 250,000 were recovered from Reading Festival. These used cups formed 11 recycling bales, each weighing in at 550kg, therefore creating a total weight of 6050kg.
“We are proud of this achievement and are grateful to Festival Republic, Pronto-Pack and the services of Simply Cups, a specialist in this area, who were committed to this project from the start,” says Huhtamaki’s Neil Whittall. “It clearly demonstrates that great strides are being made in both collecting and recycling of paper cups.”
Put another way, with Huhtamaki’s support and by the adoption of an insightful and collaborative approach to waste management alongside Festival Republic and Simply Cups, over 6 tonnes of used paper cups will now be turned in to new and functional products.
