Huhtamaki Open World-First ‘Fresh’ Factory

The value and significance of driving business growth through innovation couldn’t be greater - an ethos certainly at the heart of local Lurgan company and global food packaging specialist, Huhtamaki.

Launching its world-leading ‘Fresh’ factory in February and creating 30 new local jobs last year, Huhtamaki’s pioneering sustainability project demonstrates product innovation at its best.  Thanks to funding from Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking EU Grant, supported by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Huhtamaki has been able to diversify their product range using world leading innovations in product development.

Acutely aware of the importance of sustainability to our society, environment and the economy, Huhtamaki’s new factory produces moulded trays for the food and drink sector that uniquely uses sustainable fibres, making the trays recyclable and home compostable as well as being oven and microwave safe.

Opening the new ‘Fresh’ Factory at Huhtamaki before the Covid-19 crisis, Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Councillor Mealla Campbell commented:

“It was an honour to officially open Huhtamaki’s ground-breaking and innovative ‘Fresh’ factory earlier this year. With a commitment to producing alternatives to plastic and to the economic growth of our borough, Huhtamaki represent true ambassadors for sustainable and long-term business growth”.

A natural and better alternative to plastic, Huhtamaki’s new moulded trays were praised among peers, picking up the Waitrose Sustainability Award in 2019. Huhtamaki currently sells its ‘Fresh’ products to Waitrose stores across UK and The Happy Pear in selected Irish stores – with plans afoot to broaden its sales across Ireland.
