Meet Smilepack, the 100% plastic free egg carton designed for U.S. retail shelves

The Smilepack egg carton helps eliminate plastic from egg packaging and makes your product stand out. It has been specially designed for U.S. retail shelves. The cartons can be recycled in regular paper stream and they are home and industrially compostable.

Smilepack is a high-quality, plastic-free alternative to PET or polystyrene foam egg packaging. Optimized for U.S. retail shelves, the carton is made from sustainable materials, can be recycled, provides more opportunities to showcase product attributes and stands out on retail shelves. The cartons have been designed to optimize the logistics of packing, loading, stacking and retrieval.

High-quality packaging, specially designed for the U.S. and Brazil

High-quality packaging ensures hygiene and food safety while preventing food waste. Eggs remain fresher for longer in fiber-based egg cartons when compared to plastic or foam-based alternatives.

Smilepack has been specially designed to meet the functional and sustainability needs of Huhtamaki’s customers in the United States and Brazil. The Smilepack cartons have been crafted to fit perfectly in commonly used outer crates and are tailored for retail shelves in the U.S. market.

Smilepack is already in use in the U.S. by a prominent producer and distributor of free-range eggs, whose products are sold in retail stores across the country. It is estimated that by switching to fiber packaging, this company will eliminate around 4.6 million plastic egg cartons, or around 200 metric tons of plastic annually.

The Smilepack cartons are manufactured in Huhtamaki’s manufacturing site in Brazil, supplying the North American and Brazilian market.

A plastic-free and recyclable choice

Made with fiber recovered from recycled paper, Smilepack is a totally fiber-based replacement for PET or polystyrene foam egg packaging. The cartons can be recycled in regular paper stream and they are home and industrially compostable.

“We are proud to be able to offer this sustainable and functional solution to customers across the U.S. and Brazil,” says Gala Mansurova, Head of Eggs, Produce and Fruits Category, Fiber Foodservice Europe-Asia-Oceania at Huhtamaki. “We are committed to design for circularity to ensure that our products are recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030 and as part of that we are focused on developing innovative sustainable packaging solutions for our customers where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. In the case of Smilepack cartons, we provide a sustainable alternative to plastic packaging and have also optimized the design for easy handling and increased on-shelf visibility for our customers.”

Make your product stand out on the shelf

Compared to plastic or foam-based egg packaging, Smilepack carton is more impactful on store shelves. It offers up to 10% more billboard space on the label when compared to current plastic alternatives. That means more opportunities to deliver product information and marketing messages to consumers.

Smilepack cartons are available in different colors, which can be used to differentiate between egg sizes and brands, to indicate free-range or enriched eggs or even launch campaigns. Additional, and often, excess wrapping is no longer needed when you switch from PET packaging to molded fiber as fiber packaging reduces the need for several plastic layers. Moreover, sustainable packaging in itself is a great way to communicate about your brand’s values and help your customers meet their sustainability goals.
